외국어 잘 하는 법 How to improve your foreign language skills
여러분은 외국어를 왜 공부해요? 언어 연구를 위해서, 외국과 비즈니스를 하기 위해서,
해외여행을 하기 위해서 등등… 각자 이유가 있을 거예요. 물론 취미로 외국어를 배우는
사람들도 많이 있죠. 요즘에 통역이나 번역을 해주는 앱과 AI서비스도 있지만 직접
외국어를 배워서 듣고 말하고 읽고 쓰는 것과 비교할 수는 없죠.
일본의 언어학자 ‘지노 에이이치’는 “외국어 잘 하는 법”이라는 책을 썼어요. 저자는
처음 외국어를 공부할 때 실력이 늘지 않아서 고민을 많이 했다고 해요. 하지만 결국
영어, 독일어, 프랑스어, 체코어 등에 능통한 언어학자가 되었어요. 저자는 이렇게
조언해요.
“배우고 싶은 외국어를 정하고 어느 정도까지 배울지 목표를 세워야한다.”
읽기, 쓰기, 말하기를 모두 잘 하려면 언어 난이도에 따라 3년에서 5년 정도의 시간이
필요하다고 해요. 실생활에서 대화할 수 있는 수준까지 배울 지, 아니면 더 나아가 책을
읽고 내용을 이해할 수 있는 수준까지 배울지 목표를 정하고 공부를 시작하는 게 도움이
될 거예요.
그리고 저자는 “배우고 싶은 언어가 생기면 일단 무조건 단어 1000개를 외워라.”라고
말해요. 이렇게 하면 언어공부에 탄력을 받게 된다고 해요.
그럼 문법공부는 어떻게 할까요? 문법은 외국어를 하는 데 필요한 실용적인
‘수단’이에요. 문법 공부 자체가 목적이 될 필요는 없어요. 학문 연구를 위한 공부가
아니면 일반 사람들한테 필요한 것은 기초적인 문법 지식이에요. 문법을 공부하는 건
맞지만 문법 공부에 너무 스트레스 받지 않아도 돼요.
저자는 “많은 언어를 사용할 수 있으면 세상을 바라보는 시야 또한 넓어진다.”라고
말해요. 체코어에는 이런 표현이 있대요.
“언어를 많이 알면 알수록 그만큼 인간은 성장한다.”

Why do you study foreign languages? Is it for linguistic research, international business, travel abroad, or something else? Everyone has their own reasons. Of course, many people also learn foreign languages as a hobby.
These days, there are apps and AI services that offer translation and interpretation, but nothing compares to learning a language yourself—listening, speaking, reading, and writing it.
A Japanese linguist named Eiichi Jino wrote a book called How to Become Good at Foreign Languages. He said that when he first started learning foreign languages, he struggled a lot because he didn’t see much improvement. But in the end, he became fluent in English, German, French, Czech, and more.
He offers this advice:
“Choose the foreign language you want to learn and set a goal for how far you want to go.”
If you want to become good at reading, writing, and speaking, it may take around 3 to 5 years depending on the language’s difficulty. You should decide whether your goal is to have everyday conversations, or to reach a level where you can read books and understand them. Setting a clear goal will help guide your studies.
He also says that once you choose the language, you should start by memorizing 1,000 words no matter what. This gives your learning momentum.
So what about grammar?
Grammar is a practical tool for using the language. It doesn’t need to be your main focus. Unless you’re studying for academic research, what most people need is just basic grammar knowledge. It’s good to study grammar, but don’t stress too much over it.
The author says,
“The more languages you can use, the broader your perspective on the world becomes.”
There’s even a saying in Czech:
“The more languages you know, the more you grow as a person.”
